Staff

Hello everybody.  I obviously don't post too much here but figured this was newsworthy:  A52 has offered me a staff position as a Lead Flame Artist and I have accepted.  On August 8th it became official.  I'm very excited about what the future has in store!

Les Savy Fav @ The Echoplex 01.28.11

I saw Les Savy Fav last Friday at the Echoplex.  Very Excellent.  The Echoplex is a little bit big for me though.  There happened to be a barrier in front of the stage that a bunch of photographers ran up behind when they started playing.  Naturally, I snuck in also.  I got some good pics.  Check them out here.

Obits and The Night Marchers - The Echo

This show happened almost a month ago but I'm just now getting around to posting the pics.  Opening band was horrible.  They were called AM.  I don't know who booked them but it sounded like open-mic night at the teen-center.  The Night Marchers and Obits were in top form as always.  Must say I liked the Alex's show more however.  Better venue.  Better vibe.

By the way - Sohrab from Obits is one of the coolest dudes ever.  We had a long conversation before the show about being a horse in California, where old chickens go to live out their years, rowdy fans, and Fugazi.  He also used to be in a really good band called Edsel.  You should all give them a listen.

Obits and The Night Marchers - Alex's Bar

I went to see Obits and The Night Marchers a couple Tuesdays ago at Alex's Bar.  I'm pretty sure this is my favorite venue around L.A.  All my favorite bands play there and I can always get a spot right in front of the stage.  I saw the Hot Snakes there years ago and what better way to re-experience that than this night.  The Tijuana Panthers opened, Obits played second and The Night Marchers closed.  Obits and NM played a lot of new songs I hadn't heard yet - which might mean new records in the works.  Good news.  Here are the pics and at the bottom there's a video of The Night Marchers doing "Dead Sleep" - bad sound, apologies - no audio controls on the 7D:

always weird when somebody else's flash goes off right when you take a picture:

Ghostly International Showcase

Since I discovered the eclectic, genre-defying sounds of Ghostly International years ago, it has become one of my favorite record labels.  On July 10th they threw a showcase in L.A. that happened to feature two of my favorite artists on the label, Tycho and Mux Mool, and two others I hadn't heard, Shigeto and The Sight Below.  This was the third Saturday after my ACL surgery and I was apprehensive of standing on crutches for so long but the show was too good to pass up.  It was held at The Stone Bar in Hollywood, a venue I'd never even heard of.  The stage was small, something I always like, giving the whole night a local feel, even though none of the artists were actually from L.A.  Not surprising for a Ghostly show, I heard a totally different style of "electronic music" from each act - as well as some live instrumentation from Shigeto and Tycho.  Lots of fun.  Lots of good tunes.  I left with tired arms and wanting ice for my knee but happy I'd gotten to see it all.
